Cervical conization is a surgical diagnostic and treatment method during which the external part of the cervix is removed. The excised tissue is usually cone-shaped, which is why the procedure is called conization.
The purpose of cervical conization is to remove the part of the cervix where atypical epithelial cells have been found. These cells have a significantly higher probability of developing into a malignant cervical tumour. The changes in the cervical epithelial cells are mostly caused by the papillomavirus.
